New Energy Vehicle Battery Fires May Finally Be Resolved, Experts Say that BMS Data Can Provide Advance Predictions

Classification:

【Summary Description】Today, the new energy vehicle market can be said to be rapidly developing.Statistics show that in the first quarter of this year, domestic new energy vehicle production and sales were 1.65 million and 1.586 million units,an increase of 27.7%and 26.2%respectively compared to the same period last year. The explosive growth in sales of new energy vehicles has also driven the rapid growth of the power battery industry.According to authoritative institutions,it is predicted that by 2025,the sales and demand for power batteries will reach 11.2 million GWh.

Today, the new energy vehicle market can be said to be rapidly developing.Statistics show that in the first quarter of this year, domestic new energy vehicle production and sales were 1.65 million and 1.586 million units,an increase of 27.7%and 26.2%respectively compared to the same period last year. The explosive growth in sales of new energy vehicles has also driven the rapid growth of the power battery industry.According to authoritative institutions,it is predicted that by 2025,the sales and demand for power batteries will reach 11.2 million GWh.

Although new energy vehicles have significant energy-saving and environmental protection characteristics,as a type of chemical energy storage device, batteries still have many uncertainties.Especially in recent years, with the increasing energy density of power batteries and the increasing activity of the positive electrode materials, combined with the fact that cars are a large consumer product, once a self-ignition occurs it can have severe consequences. Therefore, the issue of battery safety has been magnified, and it even affects the future development of new energy vehicles. The frequent incidents of new energy vehicle self-ignition in recent years have made many potential new energy users hesitant to buy cars.

In the face of user concerns,at present, apart from relying on their own efforts to minimize the probability of thermal runaway of battery packs, car companies have also made great efforts in marketing. For example, some brands say that self-ignition has been erased from their dictionary, while others say that needle puncture tests are only the entry-level safety standard. However, one can only say that it has to a certain extent improved users'perception of the presence of a"tiger"in their minds but it has not fundamentally solved the safety obstacle.
So,what makes it difficult to prevent battery self-ignition,and are there any real solutions available?

Recently,at the opening of the 2023(27th)Guangdong,Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area Motor Show&New Energy Vehicle Expo, the 2023 Future Automotive Pioneers Conference was also held simultaneously.Several experts from the new energy vehicle industry shared their exclusive insights and held discussions.Among them,at the Power Battery Industry New Track Exploration Forum,Jiang Jiuchun,Chief Scientist of the Beijing Institute of Technology Shenzhen Automotive Research Institute, shared his new research results. He said that the problem of power battery self-ignition is now expected to be perfectly solved through the combination of"vehicle, cloud, and ground"data.
